Often called the “siege of Hue,” the battle began with a surprise offensive by North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces who seized control of most of the city. For nearly a month, combined American and South Vietnamese forces fought street-by-street to gradually recapture the city. This intense urban warfare had a profound effect on the American public’s perception of the war.
