By 1965, an astonishing 250 km of tunnels crisscrossed Cu Chi and its surrounding areas, connecting directly to the notorious Iron Triangle guerrilla power base across the Saigon River. These tunnels played a vital role in the American War, allowing the Viet Cong to control a large rural area just 30-40 km outside Saigon. At its height, the multi-level tunnel system stretched from Saigon to the Cambodian border, featuring innumerable trap doors, living areas, storage facilities, weapons factories, field hospitals, command centers, and kitchens.
Today, the remaining tunnels serve as a major tourist attraction, offering visitors a unique and visceral experience of underground life during the American War. The tunnels have been widened for visitor comfort (otherwise, entry would be impossible!). For those interested, there’s even an opportunity to fire rounds from an AK-47 or M16 at the nearby rifle range. Upon our return to Saigon, you’ll have free time to explore the city by yourself.
